CHARLESTON, W.Va. — U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) today announced $430,000 in funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to support a number of environmental education and revitalization projects in Monongalia, Preston, Tucker and Upshur Counties.
 
“West Virginia is such a beautiful place to call home, and it’s important that we continue working to preserve our state for future generations,” Senator Capito said. “This funding will help support a number of projects to clean up our communities and protect West Virginia’s natural beauty for years to come.”
 
“These grants will help our communities revive sites that have great potential, while helping to create new opportunities for West Virginia communities and businesses and expand recreation opportunities for children,” said Senator Manchin. “This announcement is great news for West Virginia.”
 
Individual awards listed below:

  • $30,000 - Friends of Deckers Creek (FODC) Expanding Environmental Education Opportunities in Northern West Virginia: FODC will coordinate water quality workshops and field trips within the rural communities of Monongalia and Preston Counties, leading tours of stream restoration projects, acid mine drainage remediation projects, water treatment facilities and other areas within the watershed where environmental improvements are taking place.
  • $200,000 - City of Thomas Brownfields Assessment: This funding will be used to inventory, characterize, assess and conduct cleanup planning and community involvement related activities for Brownfields sites in Thomas, WV.
  • $200,000 - Upshur County Commission Brownfields Cleanup: This funding to the Upshur County Commission will be used to clean up the Upshur County Youth Camp Tar Pit. The cleanup will expand recreational opportunities to the camp and to the broader community.
