WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $1,149,720 to restore Coonskin Park in Kanawha County from damage that occurred during the 2016 flood. This funding is made available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will help repair the parks pool, sewer system, irrigation system, and service roads.

“For years, Coonskin Park has been a staple in Kanawha County and provides a recreational respite for West Virginians across the region. I am very pleased to secure funds through my subcommittee that will help repair damages from the terrible floods in 2016. This support for infrastructure at the park will help increase accessibility and create more opportunities for families to enjoy our wild and wonderful state. I will continue to advocate for additional flood relief for West Virginia and look forward to these improvements being made at Coonskin Park,” said Senator Capito.

“In 2016, Coonskin Park was badly damaged in the flooding that ravaged our state, leaving our communities devastated and mourning the loss of 23 West Virginians. Every day I think about those we lost during those awful floods,” said Senator Manchin. “This funding will help Kanawha County rebuild the park and prepare for future threats to the area from natural disasters. I look forward to seeing the finished product and I know while many communities have been able to rebuild after the storm, not everyone has received the help they need. I will keep fighting for every West Virginian to get the assistance they need and deserve to recover from the terrible 2016 floods.”
