WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) today announced $479,545 for the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Assistance. Funding will help support the county’s goal of using analytical technology and broad-based collaborative partnerships to create a program that brings together law enforcement and community-based partners to fight the opioid epidemic.
“It is crucial that we all work together in the fight against the opioid epidemic. No single person or group can tackle the problem of addiction on their own, which is why I’ve called for a spectrum of solutions,” Senator Capito said. “Partnerships between law enforcement and community organizations that promote information sharing and coordination will present a unified front against this scourge. I applaud Harrison County’s efforts to meet this challenge head-on.”
“Local law enforcement see first-hand the effects the opioid crisis has on their communities,” Senator Manchin said. “By working directly with the communities, West Virginia law enforcement officials will be better equipped to handle the different challenges presented by the opioid epidemic. Harrison County is setting a great example of community-based solutions, and I commend them for leading the effort to solve this crisis.”
