WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Appropriations Committee, today announced $194,944 for the Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Access and Mobility Partnership Grants program. Funding will support access to mental and behavioral health care—including treatment for addiction—for seniors and the disadvantaged in southern West Virginia through the coordination and improvement of transportation services.
“Modern, dependable health care is essential to the well-being of West Virginians,” Senator Capito said. “In our rural communities, it can sometimes be difficult to access these services due to few options and long drives to the closest hospital or health center. This funding will help those in southern West Virginia dealing with addiction or mental health issues more easily receive the care they need.”
“West Virginia is known as the Mountain State and although our mountains are beautiful, the terrain can prove to be difficult for some to access the healthcare and mental health services they need. That is why it is critical that we invest in medical transportation services,” Senator Manchin said. “As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to bring partnerships like this to West Virginia to ensure that every Mountaineer has access to the healthcare and mental health services they need, no matter where they live.”
