WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Appropriations Committee, today announced a $747,528 Rural Residency Planning and Development Program (RRPD) grant for the West Virginia University (WVU) Research Corporation. Funding will be awarded over a three-year period and will support the creation of new rural residency programs. West Virginia is one of 21 states that will receive this funding, which was awarded through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
“Improving health care for all West Virginians has always been a top priority of mine,” Senator Capito said. “Throughout my time in Congress, I have worked to ensure West Virginians have access to modern and reliable health care facilities no matter where they live. This funding will help train residents and encourage them to practice in these rural parts of the state that need them the most. This is great news for WVU and the entire state of West Virginia, and I will continue working to secure similar resources that will go a long way in improving the health and wellbeing of all West Virginians.”
“Health practitioners in West Virginia work day and night to ensure the health of all West Virginians, from combatting the opioid epidemic to providing care in rural areas, they truly do it all. Allowing West Virginia University to develop a new rural residency program will allow these hardworking individuals new opportunities and improve our healthcare systems in West Virginia. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will fight to bring more opportunities and funding to our state,” Senator Manchin said.
