CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $50,000 in grant funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to the West Virginia Humanities Council.
The grant will enable the council to redesign a 2005 traveling exhibition, “Born of Rebellion: West Virginia Statehood,” and develop an online “civics toolkit” for K–12 teachers comprised of articles, graphics, and interactive media on West Virginia history that aligns with state curriculum standards.
“How West Virginia came to be a state is a fascinating story, and one that we should be proud to tell,” Senator Capito said. “I’m glad more people will be able to learn about and appreciate the history of our great state through this funding announcement.”
“I am pleased the National Endowment for the Humanities is investing in redesigning an exhibition telling the story of West Virginia’s rich history. Not only will this funding support a traveling exhibition for more West Virginians to enjoy, it will create an online learning tool for West Virginia teachers,” Senator Manchin said. “I am proud of our state’s incredible story and I look forward to seeing this exhibit.”
The funding is part of NEH’s “A More Perfect Union” initiative, which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
