WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced $440,295 from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the Lincoln County Board of Education. This funding will be used to invest in video conference technology to provide interactive distance learning in Lincoln County.

“Distance learning and technology in the classroom are increasingly important to preparing students for the 21st century workforce,” Senator Capito said. “Ensuring West Virginians are able to compete in a global, digital economy is one of the reasons I have been a strong advocate of expanding and improving broadband access across the state and have worked to secure funding like this on the Appropriations Committee. I look forward to seeing the education opportunities that will result from these resources and will continue to support programs that give our children the tools to succeed.”

“Rural communities, like those in Lincoln County, have unique challenges when it comes to education and we must do everything we can to make sure those students and teachers have the resources they need,” Senator Manchin said. “This funding will help Lincoln County bridge that gap and provide quality education to even the most rural students. Education is the foundation for a successful life and I’m glad Lincoln County is receiving this funding.”

Rural Development investments will be used to help the Lincoln County Board of Education purchase video conferencing equipment to provide interactive distance learning services to eight hub/end user sites located in Lincoln County. The project will provide portable video conferencing units and software to allow the schools to support expanded educational opportunities to elementary, middle and high schools, improve college and career readiness, provide education services to home bound and home schooled children and increase job training opportunities throughout the county.
