WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $11,869,107 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Head Start. Funding will support Head Start programs in several Southern West Virginia counties that promote educational development for pre-school age children.
“A good education is the foundation for a lifetime of opportunity and success,” Senator Capito said. “Unfortunately, not all children are adequately prepared for the classroom from day one, and it is important that we support their development before they begin their primary education. I will continue to be an advocate for Head Start because I believe in the value of education for our children’s future and the future of West Virginia.”

Ninety percent of a child’s brain is developed by the age of five, which makes early education critical. Programs like Head Start ensure that every child, no matter their background or circumstance, has the skills and knowledge needed to be successful throughout their education. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am proud to have secured funding for these West Virginia Head Start programs and will continue fighting to bring more opportunities to our state because every child in West Virginia deserves a quality education,” Senator Manchin said.
