WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) today announced a total of $253,905 for the South Charleston Fire Department under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. The funds will go toward operations and safety, and can be used to purchase training and protective gear and equipment for wellness and fitness, as well as to make health and safety improvements to stations and facilities.
“Our firefighters selflessly put the safety of others first, and they deserve the very best training and equipment to effectively do their jobs,” said Senator Capito. “The Assistance to Firefighters Grants will allow the South Charleston Fire Department to purchase the equipment they need to prepare for and respond to emergency situations quickly and efficiently.”
“I believe in our committed firefighters, who wake up every day, leave their families at home and put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe,” Senator Manchin said. “My experience working with the volunteer rescue squad in Marion County has allowed me to appreciate their hard work firsthand. These grants will provide our first responders at the South Charleston Fire Department, who sacrifice so much, with the tools needed to make sure that they can quickly respond to West Virginians in times of need.”
A program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and to enhance their ability to protect the public and first responders from fire and related hazards.
