WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) this week introduced a resolution honoring the Marshall University Thundering Herd men's soccer team for winning the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's soccer national championship.
“When the eyes of the sports world were on Marshall’s soccer team, they delivered for their university, for Huntington, and for the entire state of West Virginia,” Senator Capito said. “We are so proud of the players, coaches, and staff who worked all year to prepare to meet the moment and bring home a championship. A special congratulations to Head Coach Chris Grassie for leading this group and transforming Marshall’s soccer program into not just a national contender, but Division I champs. Go Herd!”
“I am thrilled to congratulate Marshall University men’s soccer team for winning the NCAA College Cup National Championship,” Senator Manchin said. “Woven into the fabric of our Thundering Herd community is a strong history of success in the face of adversity. This historic season has further cemented that legacy and all of West Virginia is beaming with pride. I am honored to lead this resolution congratulating the Marshall University men’s soccer team and further recognizing their remarkable accomplishment.”
On Monday, May 17, Marshall defeated Indiana University in overtime by a score of 1-0. Jamil Roberts scored his third game-winning goal in the NCAA Tournament in the 98th minute of the title game, solidifying the Thundering Herd’s victory and earning him the title of the NCAA Tournament’s Offensive Most Outstanding Player.
Marshall’s championship is the first national championship in the history of the men’s soccer program, and the university’s first Division I championship in any sport.
