WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Representative David McKinley (R-W.Va.) announced an additional $24,855,591 through the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for public transportation across West Virginia.
“Prioritizing the safety of our public transit systems and modernization of aging transit infrastructure will help make these services more accessible to our residents,” Senator Capito said. “That’s why I made certain during the infrastructure bill negotiations that resources would be made available for rural communities, and I’m pleased to see our state receive this level of funding. Investments like this will not only help West Virginians travel safer and more efficiently, but it will also help promote manufacturing and spur economic development across our state. This is another example of how the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is bringing needed investments into West Virginia.”
“Many West Virginians rely on public transportation to go to work, school and to pick up their kids from daycare, while seniors and disabled West Virginians rely on rural bus routes to attend appointments or go to the grocery store,” Senator Manchin said. “In our cities and rural counties, it’s critical that our public transportation is safe and secure for every West Virginian. I’m pleased West Virginia will receive an additional $24.8 million to support our public transportation systems and will continue advocating for public transportation support for rural states like West Virginia.”
“Ensuring Americans living in rural communities – especially our seniors – have access to transportation is vital. The additional funding from the infrastructure bill will modernize and support reliable transportation options for people in West Virginia for travel to work and to access health care and other essential services,” Representative McKinley said.
In February, Senators Capito and Manchin also announced $13,862,297 from the FTA to support transit programs in the Mountain State. In total, West Virginia has received $38,717,888 from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for public transit.
