WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) joined Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and five other Senators on a congressional delegation trip to Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq last week.
“After having the opportunity to once again visit this region of the world and see firsthand the turmoil that threatens the security of America and our allies, I am more grateful than ever for our troops and the sacrifices they make to keep us safe. Meeting with West Virginians serving in Afghanistan was such an honor, and I have the utmost gratitude and respect for their service and sacrifices.
“I am apprehensive about the administration’s framework for a nuclear deal with Iran that was announced while my colleagues and I were visiting the region last week. After speaking with world leaders, including Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, I have grave concerns about the risks of leaving an Iranian nuclear program in place and strongly believe that any final deal with Iran should be subject to congressional approval.”
Senator Capito and Majority Leader McConnell were joined on the trip by Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO), Steve Daines (R-MT), David Perdue (R-GA), Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Ben Sasse (R-NE).
During their trip, the Senators met with U.S. troops, military officials and political leaders to discuss political, economic and security issues affecting bilateral relations. In addition to visiting with troops from West Virginia, Senator Capito met with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Israeli President Rivlin, Jordanian King Abdullah, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Iraqi President Masum and Afghan President Ghani.
The delegation returned to Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
