WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, this week announced Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) will serve as the chairman of the Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee. The subcommittee oversees EPA regulations established under the Clean Air Act, including rules to curb carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants.

“I am honored to welcome Senator Shelley Capito (R-WV) to serve as the Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Safety.  Senator Capito answered the call from the people of West Virginia to fight against the Environmental Protection Agency's unnecessary regulations, and to lead the charge in fighting the Administration's War On Coal.  Senator Capito's dedicated leadership will make West Virginians proud as we work together to put America back on the map as a place to do business and pursue economic opportunity for many hardworking Americans.”  – U.S. Senator Inhofe (R-Okla.)

“I am deeply grateful to Senator Inhofe for entrusting me with this responsibility. I cannot think of a set of issues more important to the people of West Virginia. This role puts me in a strong position to fight back against the war on West Virginia coal and the EPA’s overreach, which has expanded into our entire energy and manufacturing sectors,” said Capito.

“Crushing regulations targeting coal-fired power plants, and now methane emissions from natural gas, have a huge negative impact on West Virginia’s vital energy industry.  I look forward to making sure West Virginia’s voice is heard in my new role as chairman of the Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee,” Capito added.

The Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Clean Air Act, Indoor Air, Tennessee Valley Authority, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Nuclear Plant Safety. For more information about the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, visit www.epw.senate.gov.
