WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that West Virginia will receive an additional $42,383,000 for flood relief from the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program. This funding announcement comes after Senator Capito requested that U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson work with West Virginia to determine if there are any unmet needs for those impacted by the June 2016 storm. Combined with previous CDBG disaster relief funding announcements totaling $107 million, today’s announcement brings West Virginia’s total CDBG-DR funding in response to the storm to $149,000,000.
“Even though it has been a year since devastating floods ripped through West Virginia, the state continues to pick up the pieces,” Senator Capito said. “This funding is welcome news, as it will help us continue recovery efforts, and help many West Virginians rebuild. I am thankful that HUD Secretary Carson and FEMA have all listened to my request for these funds that will help so many in need.”
