WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) released the following statement after securing a commitment from Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to mark up the Miners Protection Act as early as next month and no later than September 30, 2016. Today’s commitment came after Senator Capito and a bipartisan group of Senators voted against cloture on legislation to address Puerto Rico’s debt crisis.
“I am proud to be a leader in the fight to protect health and pension benefits for tens of thousands of the nation’s miners, including many in West Virginia. The Miners Protection Act is vital legislation for miners whose health care benefits will end later this year if Congress fails to act. With today’s announcement, I am confident that the Senate Finance Committee will approve the Miners Protection Act in the coming weeks, a major step towards seeing this bill become law,” said Senator Capito.
