WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement after being selected as chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee:
“Protecting and securing our borders is something I have long been committed to, and I am excited for the opportunity to continue those efforts as chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee. And while border security is a critical priority, I recognize that this subcommittee’s jurisdiction is much broader—overseeing funding for FEMA, the Coast Guard, TSA, and the Secret Service to name a few. I look forward to working with the agencies and the dedicated professionals at each of them to ensure that taxpayer dollars are used responsibly, efficiently, and effectively to keep Americans safe and protect the lives and the missions of the brave men and women who serve our country in so many different capacities.”
BACKGROUND
As a member of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Capito works to ensure West Virginia’s priorities are considered when our nation’s funding decisions are determined. She previously served as chairman of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee during the 114th Congress and as chairman of the Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) Subcommittee earlier this Congress. As chair of FSGG, Senator Capito oversaw a historic increase in resources to combat the opioid epidemic through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) and Drug Free Communities programs, helped ensure resources to support implementation of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and promoted the expansion of rural broadband access through Federal Communications Commission (FCC) funding.
