WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today released the following statement regarding the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy:
“Justice Kennedy has played a vital role in the system of checks and balances that keeps our democracy strong and sets our government apart from so many others around the world. We owe him a great deal of gratitude for his service.
“President Trump now has an opportunity to put forward a new, well-qualified nominee to serve in his place. He chose an exceptional candidate in Neil Gorsuch, and I was proud to support Justice Gorsuch’s nomination. I look forward to working with the president and my colleagues through the confirmation process to ensure our next Supreme Court justice will also uphold the rule of law fairly, defend the Constitution with integrity, and represent the principles and conservative values our nation was built on.”
