WASHINGTON, DC – Ahead of the Senate’s vote this evening to open debate on the Keystone XL pipeline, U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) released the following statement:

“Construction of the Keystone XL pipeline is imperative if we want to grow jobs, improve our energy infrastructure and turn our economy around. My first act in the Senate was co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill to authorize the Keystone XL pipeline’s construction and today I will proudly vote to advance this important legislation.

“After six years of politically motivated delays and obstruction, opponents of this legislation - led by President Obama - have finally run out of excuses. The American people have spoken – they want us to build this commonsense, job-creating pipeline. I am confident the new Senate will come together in a bipartisan way to approve the pipeline’s construction and place the spotlight squarely on President Obama to decide if he will work with us or continue to defy the will of the American people.”

Capito, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, is a co-sponsor of the Keystone XL Pipeline Act, which allows construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline without the President’s approval. This is the first piece of legislation Capito has co-sponsored as a United States Senator.
