WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, today issued the following statement regarding Vice President Mike Pence and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s trip to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Advanced Training Center (ATC) in Harpers Ferry:

“I was thrilled the vice president, Secretary Nielsen, and others from the administration had an opportunity to see the good work happening in West Virginia to help secure our border and keep Americans safe. As chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, I have been proud to deliver funding to support the dedicated men and women at the Harpers Ferry ATC and their efforts. There is no question that their work is vital to our nation’s security.”

The Harpers Ferry ATC is managed by the CBP’s Office of Training and Development (OTD) and is designed to train and educate agency personnel to meet emerging homeland security challenges at our nation’s borders and beyond. Vice President Pence and Secretary Nielsen—along with CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan and OTD Assistant Administrator Chris Hall—toured the center and received a briefing on the humanitarian and security crisis at the southern border.

While Senator Capito was unable to accompany the vice president due to votes in the Senate, she has visited the facility numerous times, including a March 2017 visit with U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-Ark.).
