WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today released the following statement after meeting with President Donald J. Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and other senators:

“I was very encouraged by today’s meeting at the White House, which focused on a range of policy issues, including USMCA, drug pricing, and ways we can continue improving our economy. During the lunch, I made it a priority to raise directly with the president the issue of securing our miners' pensions by passing and signing into law the Bipartisan American Miners Act. President Trump is aware of the importance of miners’ pensions and is committed to working with me on this. In addition to miners’ pensions, I also took the opportunity to discuss with him our ongoing efforts to secure our southern border and thanked him for his leadership, which has helped improve the situation at the border. As chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee, appropriating the resources needed to secure our borders by investing in a wall system, including physical barriers, technology, and personnel, is something that is critically important. Earlier this year, I was proud my Homeland Security funding bill—which included the $5 billion he requested for the border wall system—passed out of the full committee. I assured the president that this remains a top priority, and this is something I will continue fighting for. I look forward to working with the Trump Administration and my colleagues in the Senate to address these issues that are so critical to West Virginia and communities across America.”

Earlier today, Senator Capito spoke on the Senate floor urging her colleagues to pass the Bipartisan American Miners Act. Click here to watch the full speech.
