WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today announced that she will join a congressional delegation visit to the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in the coming days with Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.).

The Senators will tour Joint Task Force Guantanamo, review detention operations at the base and meet with troops serving there, including service members from their respective states. They will also discuss the impact of a court order currently preventing female service members from performing their duties as guards for the “9/11 Five” after complaints from the terrorist detainees. The 9/11 Five, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, are charged with facilitating the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“This being my first visit to Guantanamo, I look forward to personally thanking our troops serving there and seeing firsthand the facilities used to detain dangerous terrorists,” said Senator Capito. “I have been a strong supporter of detaining terrorists in a manner that ensures the safety and security of all Americans and fought to prevent President Obama from bringing those terrorists into the United States. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and the Subcommittee for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, I have worked hard to make sure our military members receive the support and protection they need, our borders are secure and the United States remains vigilant in defending against terrorism and threats to national security.”
