WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) released the below statement today after voting, along with an overwhelming majority of the Senate, to approve the accession of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“Today’s vote to approve the accession of Finland and Sweden into NATO reinforces the strongest military alliance in world history. With their robust economies, modern militaries, and strategic locations, Finland and Sweden are more than ready to be valuable contributors to NATO. As Putin’s land war rages on in Europe, expanding NATO sends a strong message to Russia and other adversaries that we will continue to stand strongly with our allies. I applaud the Senate’s approval of Finland and Sweden, and look forward to welcoming the two countries as full members of NATO in our shared fight for freedom,” Senator Capito said.

The measure will now go to President Biden for his approval. Each of the 30 NATO member countries must approve accession of Finland and Sweden before the nations officially join NATO.
