CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, joined colleagues in calling for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to delay a scheduled furlough at the agency beginning at the end of this month using funds from within their present budget. A bipartisan and bicameral group of members of the relevant authorizing and Appropriations Committees authored a letter to show support for the workers and mission of the agency in the face of these impending furloughs.
“I’ve been working for several weeks now to address this issue and prevent these furloughs with administration officials and my colleagues in Congress,” Chairman Capito said. “The men and women of USCIS have a critical function, and furloughs would hamper our system across the nation and for many West Virginians. The work of USCIS is too important to furlough these workers at this time when the resources and ability to prevent such an action is available as we are suggesting.”
