WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.),
Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee,
today led a press conference with her colleagues to unveil the Republican infrastructure framework, which includes $568 billion in infrastructure
investments over a five-year period. She was joined by her colleagues Senators
Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Ranking Member of the Commerce, Science, and
Transportation Committee; Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Ranking Member of the Committee
on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; and John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Ranking
Member of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
HIGHLIGHTS:
ROBUST PACKAGE: “This is the largest infrastructure investment
Republicans have come forward with. This is a robust package when we look at
where we’re focusing our infrastructure needs. The funding levels and the
principles are meant to guide us. And then I would say now’s the time for the
committees to get to work.”
DEFINING INFRASTRUCTURE: “We’ve talked a lot about this. Core infrastructure.
Physical infrastructure. What do people think of in our states when they think
of infrastructure? Roads and bridges; public transit systems; rail—which could
be cargo, passenger rail; water and wastewater…ports and inland waterways;
airports; broadband…and lastly water storage and safety.”
THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY: “The American people want to see us working together.
We hear it all the time, and we know it to be true. This is a real opportunity
because of the past history we have of working through the five committees [of
jurisdiction].”
REAL OFFER: “We see this as an offer that is on the table and deserves a response. I think we will get a response. We look forward to that and we’re ready to get to work.”
