ELKINS/WESTON, W.Va. – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) addressed participants of the Rhododendron Girls State at Davis and Elkins College, and then visited Jackson’s Mill to speak to participants of Mountaineer Boys State.

“Days like today are a reminder of how fortunate West Virginia is to have bright young women and men engaged and interested in public service to our state and country,” Senator Capito said. “I’m confident the next generation of leaders are right here in Elkins and Weston this week, learning invaluable lessons they will carry with them the rest of their lives. The American Legion does a terrific job of instilling the values of patriotism, leadership, and collaboration among the high school students who participate each year, and it was a pleasure to speak at both Rhododendron Girls State and Mountaineer Boys State today.”

Rhododendron Girls State started in 1941 and is structured on the principles of Americanism, citizenship and leadership.

American Legion’s Mountaineer Boys State was founded in 1936, and holds the second-oldest charter in the nation.
