HINTON, W.Va. – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) traveled to Hinton, W.Va., where she participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for Batteau Beach at Hinton Landing. The Batteau Beach redevelopment, which was supported by a Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) award secured by Senator Capito, creates a waterfront location in Hinton that includes a kayak launch, trailhead, and park.

“I am excited to see the beginning of what will become a great park for West Virginian families and sportsmen to use,” Senator Capito said. “The facilities here will make this place a destination for those who visit the Mountain State, especially the New River Gorge. I am looking forward to seeing the park completed and the benefits it will bring to the Hinton community.”

“The City of Hinton would like to thank Senator Shelley Moore Capito for her work to secure $500,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending for the Hinton Landing project,” Mayor of Hinton Jack Scott said. “We are proud that Senator Capito shares our vision to make Hinton a destination for outdoor recreation and visitors of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve!”

Earlier in the day, Senator Capito joined the National Park Service (NPS) and The Conservation Fund to announce the addition of 963 acres to the preserve portion of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve near Sandstone, W.Va. The added acres, which are poised to greatly increase the amount of public land available for hunting and outdoor recreation activities while yielding a variety of other public benefits, are in an area commonly known as Irish Mountain. Read more about that visit here.

Additionally, Senator Capito toured Sandstone Falls with District Ranger Dave Bieri. Sandstone Falls is one of the four parts of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
