MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, joined administration, federal, and state officials, as well as local business leaders at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), in Morgantown, W.Va., to celebrate the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub’s (ARCH2) selection as an awardee of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) regional clean hydrogen hub competition, which Senator Capito helped announce recently. ARCH2 will be receiving $925 million in federal funding from the DOE for the initiative.
The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act included $9.5 billion for hydrogen, including $8 billion for Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs that will jumpstart the production, transport, and use of clean hydrogen across the U.S. economy, $1 billion for a Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis Program to reduce costs of hydrogen produced from clean electricity, and $500 million for Clean Hydrogen Manufacturing and Recycling initiatives to support equipment manufacturing and strong domestic supply chains. The legislation also requires one hub be located in Appalachia as the largest natural gas producing region. A full timeline of Senator Capito’s efforts to establish a Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub in West Virginia is available here.
“As I helped negotiate and craft the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, establishing a regional clean hydrogen hub in Appalachia was a major priority and I’m thrilled to make the announcement that West Virginia will be home to this project,” Ranking Member Capito said. “West Virginia has a proud history of energy production, and ARCH2 will help ensure that tradition continues in new and innovative ways. This project will spur economic development across our state, and is the culmination of hard work and dedication across all levels of government. This is a big win for West Virginia, and I’m proud to play a role in its establishment.”
