CHARLESTON, W.Va. — On Saturday, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) joined local, state and federal officials, as well as country music star and fellow West Virginian, Brad Paisley, in a ribbon cutting celebration of the new Herbert Hoover High School (HHHS) in Elkview, W.Va. HHHS was substantially damaged by the devastating floods in West Virginia on June 23, 2016, and needed to be rebuilt and relocated.
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Capito secured nearly $79 million in two announcements of $52,304,385 and $26,656,638 through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help rebuild Herbert Hoover High School. Throughout the rebuild, Senator Capito remained in consistent communication with officials at every level to continue to ensure this project was pushed forward, understanding its importance to the area.
“This was truly a day of celebration in Elkview, and I’m thrilled that the Herbert Hoover students, staff, and faculty have this wonderful facility to call their own. The HHHS Huskies and the members of this community have been incredibly diligent and patient throughout this process, and have continuously displayed the West Virginia spirit that makes our state so special. We will never forget the 2016 floods and the destruction it caused, but this is an important milestone in our recovery and proves the resilience of our people. I was dedicated to securing the resources needed to make this rebuild possible, and I’m thrilled that we have cut the ribbon and started a new chapter here at Herbert Hoover,” Senator Capito said.
“As we mark the opening of the new Herbert Hoover High School, we thank our West Virginia representatives, and specifically Senator Capito, for the support that got us here,” Dr. Tom Williams, Superintendent of Kanawha County Schools, said. “We could not have made it here without support from our elected leaders. This school is truly remarkable and deserved by the Elk River communities.”
