KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today made several stops in the Kanawha County area highlighting education and economic development.
First, Senator Capito made a stop in Institute, W.Va. where she toured the West Virginia State University campus and received an update on new developments, including the nursing program and football stadium.
“It’s great to see West Virginia State University continue to take steps to improve its campus and overall experience. I was particularly impressed by WVSU’s nursing program, which is helping address the nursing shortage we are seeing today. Efforts like this will go a long way in helping to attract students to further their education right here in Kanawha County. As a historically black university, WVSU is an important pillar in our community. I enjoyed my time as a guidance counselor here early in my career, and I’m committed to help in any way that I can to support their continued success,” Senator Capito said.
Senator Capito then traveled to South Charleston where she first met with Mayor Frank Mullens to discuss efforts to increase economic development in the region, as well as initiatives important to the city like GreenPower’s recent announcement to locate in the city, the Park Place retail development, and the Jefferson Road connector project. At the end of the day, Senator Capito received a tour of the West Virginia Regional Technology Park where she saw firsthand the innovative research and development efforts underway at the facility.
“The economic development and infrastructure investments happening in South Charleston are exciting, and have the potential to help drive our state’s economy in the future,” Senator Capito said. “It was also encouraging to see the creative work being done at the technology park. The future success of our state depends on our ability to take advantage of cutting-edge technology, research, and manufacturing fields, and I’m confident West Virginia is uniquely suited to meet these needs.”
