SCOTT DEPOT/SOUTH
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senator
Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today made two stops at schools in Putnam and
Kanawha counties where she spoke about the importance of civic engagement,
career development, and her experience as a U.S. Senator.
First, Senator Capito traveled
to Scott Teays Elementary School in Scott Depot, W.Va. where she met with fifth
graders. The class is currently learning about the different branches of government,
and Senator Capito shared her experiences as a state legislator, congresswoman,
and now U.S. Senator.
“I’m always inspired by the
young people of our state and their potential, and the students at Scott Teays
Elementary are no exception. Today, we had a productive conversation about civics
and the different branches of government, and I enjoyed the opportunity to
share my experience. Thanks to the hardworking teachers and staff at Scott
Teays, like Mrs. Williams and Principal Isaacs, I am confident that these fifth
graders will go on to accomplish some exciting things in the future,” Senator Capito said.
“It was a pleasure having Shelley
Moore Capito visit Scott Teays fifth graders today to extend their learning
about American Civics,” Melissa Isaacs,
Principal of Scott Teays Elementary, said. “Mrs. Capito has an amazing
rapport with students and is able to talk comfortably and share information in
a way students can easily relate to and understand. We are grateful she found
time in her busy schedule to invest in our students today!”
Next, Senator Capito traveled South Charleston High School
in South Charleston, W.Va. where she spoke to a Civics and Political Science
combined credit course, which provides both high school and college credits.
Senator Capito shared advice with the students as they progress through their
educational journey, spoke about her own experience and political involvement,
and answered questions at the end.
“It was exciting to be around
so many students at South Charleston today that are passionate about their
state, and want to make a difference in their community,” Senator Capito said. “I’m thankful for teachers like Mrs. Estep and
Principal Williams for their dedication to education in West Virginia, and
today’s visit made clear that they are making a difference in the lives of these
students. The future is bright for the South Charleston students!”
“We are honored that Senator
Capito has taken the time to come and speak with our students at South
Charleston High School. The opportunity to meet and interact with a United
States Senator is a valuable introduction to real world politics
for young adults. Participating in the political process is a
primary goal of Civics because it produces involved,
informed citizens. Thank you for being a part of this,” Kim Estep, Civics and Political Science
Teacher at South Charleston High School, said.
