WHEELING, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), today brought her West Virginia Girls Rise Up program to Bethlehem Elementary School. Third, fourth, and fifth grade female students participated in the event, where they had the chance to hear from Senator Capito on her personal experiences as a female leader.
Senator Capito launched the West Virginia Girls Rise Up program in 2015 to instill confidence in young West Virginia women and empower them to be strong and kind female leaders. The program focuses on three areas: education, fitness, and self-confidence. Today’s program marks the 24th Girls Rise Up event overall.
“Today is the first in-person Girls Rise Up event we’ve been able to have since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I’m so glad to be here in Wheeling to help inspire the next generation of female leaders in our state. I’m confident the young girls at Bethlehem Elementary School will go on to be successful, and most importantly, build each other up each and every day. If they dedicate themselves and put their minds to it, there is nothing West Virginia girls cannot do,” Senator Capito said.
“When you walk with the world on your shoulders, it proves you are invincible. Strength comes from struggle, determination, and taking advantage of unexpected opportunities. Senator Capito is forced to make tough decisions based on what she thinks is best for the people in our state. Having her speak to our Bethlehem Students is just one way she affects positive change in our communities,” Stacy Dietz, Bethlehem and West Liberty Elementary Schools Principal, said.
Prior to the Girls Rise Up program, Senator Capito attended the school’s “Dog Tags and Donuts” event, where she met with veterans, students, and others ahead of the Veterans Day holiday.
