CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) visited The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club in Charleston, W.Va. where she read to young students as part of the “Readers are Leaders” initiative. The program, which consists of local leaders reading to children, aims to prevent summer learning loss among children. During the visit, Senator Capito also donated several books from the Library of Congress to the club.
“West Virginia’s young people are the future of our great state, and we must make sure they have all of the tools needed to excel. Reading and literacy have the ability to open so many doors, and I commend the Boys & Girls Club for their efforts to inspire this love of reading at an early age. Kids work so hard all year in school and we need to make sure they continue to learn and grow, even on summer vacation,” Senator Capito said.
“The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Charleston are grateful for the ongoing support of our Readers Are Leaders efforts by Senator Capito. Our Club members always appreciate Senator Capito stopping by to read a book (or three!) and are thankful for her support in preventing summer learning loss,” Justin Clark, Executive Director of the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Charleston, W.Va., said.
