SUMMIT POINT/HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, today visited U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) training facilities in Summit Point and the Advanced Training Center (ATC) in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Senator Capito toured the training facilities, met with officers, received briefings from CBP leadership, and participated in training exercises conducted on site.

“Summit Point and Harpers Ferry are home to critical training grounds for the men and women dedicated to keeping our country safe,” Ranking Member Capito said. “In my leadership role on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, I made it a priority to support the good work of the ATC and expand its operations capacity because I recognized the potential and opportunity there. Today’s visits provided a clear reminder of why these facilities are so important, and I sincerely appreciate the work being done on the ground here that is second to none.”

BACKGROUND:

The partnership between Summit Point and CBP is a direct result of Senator Capito’s legislative efforts. In November 2019, the U.S. Department of State vacated Summit Point.

The Summit Point Training Area is comprised of 19 acres and includes classroom facilities, physical training/conditioning facilities, firing ranges, breeching/entry/tactical movement skills facilities, and several other training facilities. It is located close to CBP’s Advanced Training Facility (ATC) in Harpers Ferry. Senator Capito authored a provision in one of her Homeland Security Appropriations bills providing funding for the expansion of CBP work at Summit Point.

The Advanced Training Center is managed by the CBP’s Office of Training and Development and is designed to train and educate agency personnel to meet emerging homeland security challenges at our nation’s borders and beyond. In 2020, Senator Capito authored language included in the FY2020 appropriations bill that included a $9 million award for expansion at the ATC.
