MILTON/HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, today traveled to Milton, W.Va. and Huntington, W.Va. with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) leaders and West Virginia officials, for visits focused on recently announced flood control funding that Senator Capito secured, and continued support for current floodwall projects.

First, Senator Capito traveled to Milton, W.Va. where she visited the site of the Lower Mud River flood control project. As Ranking Member of the Senate EPW Committee, Senator Capito secured $190 million for the project last month. In 2022, Senator Capito included a measure in the Water Resources Development Act of 2022 that increased the federal share of project costs for the Lower Mud River flood control project from 65% to 90%.

“Delivering this funding marks another important milestone in our years of work alongside the Army Corps and city and state officials to get the Lower Mud River floodwall across the finish line,” Senator Capito said. “Through legislation like the Water Resources Development Act, the EPW Committee has collaborated closely with our partners on the ground to help make this project a reality, and it was great to see it firsthand today here in Milton.”

Next, Senator Capito traveled to Huntington, W.Va. where she visited the city’s floodwall project and toured the site. Senator Capito secured a provision in the Water Resources Development Act of 2022 that supports a feasibility study on the rehabilitation of Huntington’s floodwall.

“Recent flooding has underscored the need to continually upgrade and improve our local flood control infrastructure, and Huntington’s floodwall is no different,” Senator Capito said. “It’s exactly why I included a provision in the most recent Water Resources Development Act to take the important first step of conducting a feasibility study to address these needs. I’m looking forward to continue working together to advance this project and make needed improvements that will benefit residents of Huntington and the surrounding areas.”
