MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Congressman David McKinley (R-W.Va.-01) today made stops in Star City and Morgantown to tour a local wastewater treatment plant and an Abandoned Mine Land (AML) site.
First, Senator Capito and Congressman McKinley toured the Morgantown Utility Board Wastewater Treatment Plant in Star City. They then visited the Richard AML site in Morgantown. The bipartisan infrastructure law includes more than $140 million in AML funding for West Virginia over the next 15 years.
“When we were crafting the bipartisan infrastructure law, West Virginia’s core infrastructure needs such as water and wastewater systems, and abandoned mine lands, were key priorities,” Senator Capito said. “Today in Monongalia County, we saw the impact of investing in and updating these core infrastructure projects. It not only means safer, cleaner water systems and better care of our environment, but it also means more jobs right here in West Virginia. I appreciate the local leadership and hard work being done in Star City and Morgantown to continue improving our communities for hardworking families and future residents.”
“West Virginia has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to restore aging water and sewer systems, clean up abandoned mine land sites and to address roads and bridges, expand broadband and many other long-awaited physical infrastructure improvements,” Congressman McKinley said. “Today’s visits to the Morgantown Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Richard Mine AML site, was an opportunity to see, first-hand, the significant impact these types of physical infrastructure investments will have on our state, ensuring access to clean water for the people living here while also attracting economic growth and good jobs to West Virginia.”
“We appreciate Senator Capito taking time to visit our Star City wastewater treatment plant. Her being here demonstrates more than the priority she places on advancing area infrastructure. Senator Capito’s visit shows her understanding of the role infrastructure investments plays in economic development and environmental protection. Projects like this are not about putting pipes in the ground. Projects like this are about protecting public health and moving toward a more sustainable future through the employment of world-class technologies. This is what we do at MUB every day and what Senator Capito is assisting us with achieving through her various roles within our federal government. We are grateful for her support,” J.T. Straface, Chairman Morgantown Utility Board, said.
