FLEMINGTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito recently participated in a Skype conversation with students in the Energy Express program at Flemington Elementary School. Senator Capito read the children’s book, The Little Engine That Could, to roughly 25 students ranging from ages six to 10 and spoke about being West Virginia’s first female Senator. Energy Express is a summer reading and nutrition program sponsored by AmeriCorps that occurs at about 80 sites across West Virginia. The program takes place in low-income communities, where a majority of the children qualify for free or reduced lunch.

“West Virginia’s young people are the future of our great state, so we must ensure that students from all backgrounds have the resources needed to excel. The Energy Express program offers our students the chance to continue learning and growing during the summer months and helps to build a strong foundation for future success. I applaud the volunteers and AmeriCorps members who make this program possible, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to speak with these wonderful students.”
