Women's History Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), one of 25 female members of the Senate, today spoke on the Senate floor to highlight achievements of West Virginia women in celebration of Women’s History Month. As the first female senator from West Virginia, Senator Capito has prioritized inspiring the next generation of female leaders in West Virginia with her West Virginia Girls Rise Up program.

“I’m really proud to represent the state of West Virginia—a state with a long and rich history of female trailblazers and a state that respects and celebrates those women,” Senator Capito said. “As I travel across West Virginia with my West Virginia Girls Rise Up program, I am constantly amazed at the potential of the young women that I see, and I know the same is true in other states across the country. I hope those girls are watching us here in this chamber today. I hope they’re hearing the stories of the incredible women and trailblazers who have come before us, and I hope they’re thinking to themselves, ‘That could be me one day.’ I’m incredibly proud to be a part of what female leaders are doing right now, but I’m more incredibly optimistic to see what our future female leaders will do in the years ahead.”

Senator Capito launched the West Virginia Girls Rise Up program in 2015 to instill confidence in young West Virginia women and empower them to be strong, confident, and kind female leaders.
