WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today joined a group of her Republican colleagues in discussing the harmful provisions in the Democrats’ reckless tax-and-spending spree legislation and the consequences they would have on child care providers, parents, and children.

Earlier today, Senator Capito hosted a virtual discussion with local child care providers from West Virginia to hear their concerns about the negative impacts the Democrats’ reckless tax-and-spree bill would have on child care workers and families. Click here to watch the full event.

HIGHLIGHTS:

CARE FOR CHILDREN MUST REMAIN THE PRIORITY: “The cost and lack of choice is the main issue here. But, I think we all agree, the main issue are these children and their families. And how are they going to manage child care for their children? How are they going to manage to get back to work? What's most effective in rural and urban America? There's a system out there that can be improved upon…it's not like we're trying to fix a broken system.”

ON HARMFUL PROVISION BEING HIDDEN IN SPENDING BILL: “It's been kind of hidden, and there shouldn't be anything hidden about child care for our children…This is very important and I think not enough people are talking about it. But it's going to impact a lot of families all across this country.”

IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING FAITH-BASED CHILD CARE: “I have seven grandchildren...of the seven, six of them have been in faith-based daycare. My children were in faith-based daycare when they were younger. It's a system that's local, that works. It has quality education, has standards, and it works in conjunction with other private and public offerings of child care.”

HEARING FROM WEST VIRGINIA CHILD CARE PROVIDERS: “I just talked with six actual faith-based day cares in our state that have been in operation probably collectively for at least 100 years. And one of them said it's already more difficult to find staff. This bill would escalate that and make it much more difficult. If non-faith-based care is being subsidized, it will lower overhead for non-faith-based institutions and it would put them at a competitive advantage over faith-based.”

MORE CONCERNS FROM WEST VIRGINIANS: “I'd like to thank Tonya Neal from Teays Valley Christian Daycare. She said, and it was great quote, ‘where the money comes, so does the control.’ And I think that's what you see. As many of us have said, the control is wanting to be in Washington by the Democrats in this bill. And that's the structure that they've put together.”
