WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, this morning appeared on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” with Bill Hemmer and Sandra Smith to discuss current negotiations to end the partial government shutdown and the importance of providing resources to strengthen border security.
“What they [Democrats] have to be willing to give is a firm commitment and a firm number,” Senator Capito said. “We’re not seeing that at all, even though they gave us firm commitments in our committee on my bill that we passed last summer.”
“It ends with the American people saying enough is enough,” Senator Capito continued. “I mean certainly we have the Coast Guard who’s going to lose that next paycheck. We have federal prison guards in my area that I’m very concerned about, obviously a lot of people living paycheck-to-paycheck. That is going to put additional pressure on everybody.”
As chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Capito has played an active role in government funding negotiations, including those for the Department of Homeland Security and border security. She authored a government funding bill that was approved by the committee in June with bipartisan support.
