CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) made stops across West Virginia last week in Beckley, Princeton, Buffalo, Hurricane, Nutter Fort, and Clarksburg during the U.S. Senate’s state work week. The visits focused on Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) projects, health services, education, and economic development.

On Tuesday, Senator Capito traveled to Beckley, where she met with local leaders to discuss the CDS process, as well as potential projects and future economic development efforts in the region. Prior to the CDS discussion, Senator Capito met with WVU Tech President T. Ramon Stuart and toured the campus.

“As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I have made sure West Virginia’s priorities are considered when our nation’s funding decisions are determined. I am pleased that many projects in Raleigh County have received needed funding in recent years, and it was great to talk directly with West Virginians who are leading these initiatives. Thank you to WVU Tech President Stuart for showing me around campus, and highlighting the innovative projects happening right here in Raleigh County,” Senator Capito said.

Additionally, Senator Capito traveled to the Princeton Health Care Center, where she received a tour of the facility, met with staff, and discussed several of the center’s initiatives. At the end of the day, she met with local leaders in Mercer County to discuss economic development and CDS projects in the area.

“Toyota has been a force in West Virginia, and operations in Buffalo are a source of pride for this community and our entire state. I value the close relationship that we have maintained with leaders at Toyota over the years, and the progress they continue to make here in Putnam County. From increased renewable energy capabilities, efficient operations, and their growing high school work program, I am continually impressed by their work. I look forward to continuing to work with Toyota and leaders in the area towards our shared goal of increasing opportunities and available resources for West Virginians in the region,” Senator Capito said.

Also on Wednesday, Senator Capito traveled to Gritts Farms, a leader in tourism in Putnam County, to receive an update on operations and see the farm’s newest additions. She also hosted a working lunch at Belknap Dough Company with local leaders regarding recent successes and future development efforts in Putnam County.

“The Kelly Miller Community Center does a great job of helping to preserve the history of our state, while also providing fantastic services to the residents of Harrison County. I was proud to help them secure a CDS request earlier this year that will directly impact their facility—and ultimately the surrounding community. I enjoyed the opportunity to see firsthand the improvements they are making and hear about their vision for the future,” Senator Capito said.
